The Fire

"I've shed my skin, like the serpent before me, resurrecting."

I had originally planned a simple story: Lindsey is abducted by a serial killer, his seventh victim. However, when the killer dumps Lindsey, she's still alive - barely. She claims to remember nothing, befriends a young cop, steals his gun, goes to and confronts the killer. I'd planned 3 parts, maybe 3,000 words. I think I had something corny in mind: the young cop catches up just in time to get between Lindsey and the killer when Lindsey pulls the trigger.

I wasn't much into part two when I deleted what I had and opened a new document. Once I got into Lindsey's head, the story became more about the collateral damage, the damage done not only to Lindsey, but to the people around her.

Lindsey discovers dying would have been easy.
